Büyük Cami (Grand Mosque)
The Büyük Cami (Grand Mosque) is a historic mosque located in the district of Osmancık, on the banks of the Kızılırmak (Red River) in the north of Çorum, and is regarded as one of the oldest places of worship in the region. The building holds an important place within the district’s cultural heritage as a reflection of the architectural understanding of the Anatolian Seljuk period.
History
According to the sources, the mosque was commissioned by Emir Beyler Çelebi in the year 1213. This date coincides with the period when the Anatolian Seljuk State was growing stronger in Central Anatolia and intensive construction activity was being carried out in the region. The building, which has remained standing for centuries, has moved considerably away from its original appearance at the time it was first built, owing to the various repairs and interventions it has undergone. Such changes have been the common fate of many early-period mosques in Anatolia, leading the original fabric to be transformed over time through renovations.
Architecture
The mosque has a near-square plan and is covered by a dome. In its construction, cut stone was used together with brick in places; this combination of materials is a practice frequently seen in the Anatolian architecture of the period. The domed roofing system resting on a near-square plan reflects the plain and balanced design encountered in Seljuk and early-period buildings. Although part of the original qualities in the decoration and details has changed due to the repairs it has undergone, the building’s overall mass arrangement preserves its historical identity.
Location and Surroundings
The Büyük Cami is situated in Osmancık, which stretches along the Kızılırmak valley and has been an important crossing point throughout history. The district has a rich historical fabric with its castle, bridge, and religious buildings. The mosque’s surroundings form a convenient route for visitors who wish to understand Osmancık’s cultural identity, which extends from the past to the present.
For those who wish to see the district’s other historic buildings, there are many monuments in the immediate vicinity. The Osmancık Castle (Kandıber Castle), commanding a position overlooking the center of Osmancık, the Koyun Baba Bridge over the Kızılırmak, and the Akşemseddin Mosque and Madrasa, an important religious building, along with the İmaret Mosque, are among the main points worth visiting.
