Yediler Dergahı (Yediler Lodge)
The Yediler Dergahı is a historic place of pilgrimage in the Sungurlu district of Çorum, also popularly known as “Yedi Kardeşler” (the Seven Brothers). It is one of the regional examples of the dervish lodge (tekke) tradition that is widespread across Anatolia and that usually took shape around a Sufi order.
History
Since the building’s inscription has not survived, there is no definite information about when the lodge was founded or who its founder (the patron who had it built) was. This is a common problem for many tekkes and zaviyes (dervish hospices) in Anatolia; the dating of structures whose inscriptions have been lost, or that never had one, can often be carried out only through architectural features and the oral traditions of the local people. The name “Yedi Kardeşler” given to the lodge is itself a typical reflection of the folk beliefs and legends that grow up around such buildings.
During the Seljuk and Ottoman periods, dervish lodges, zaviyes and tekkes played an important role in the process of the Islamization and settlement of Anatolia, serving both religious and social functions. The existence of more than one lodge of a similar character in and around Sungurlu shows that the region is a geography in which this tradition was lived out.
Architecture
The structure that has survived to the present day does not display any distinctive feature that stands out in terms of lodge architecture. This plain appearance can be associated with the changes it has undergone since the period of its foundation and with the modest building tradition of the region. For this reason, the lodge’s true significance arises not from its architectural value but from the tradition of pilgrimage and belief maintained among the local people.
Pilgrimage and Belief
A significant portion of the visitors who come to the lodge visit it on seven consecutive Fridays and make wishes while doing so. This practice of pilgrimage, tied to specific days and numbers, is part of the vow and wish traditions frequently encountered in the tomb and lodge culture of Anatolia.
