İskilip Visitor Guide

With its Ottoman timber houses, a castle on a rocky hill and its registered dolma, İskilip is a half-day town tour: sights, a walking route and transport on one page.

İskilip is a district north of Çorum known for its well-preserved historic fabric. With its bay-windowed timber houses and stone-paved streets it is often compared to Safranbolu and Beypazarı. This page focuses on how to visit.

📍 Location and transport

İskilip is about 55–58 km from central Çorum, roughly a one to one-and-a-half hour drive (the Çorum–İskilip road, towards Kastamonu). You can reach it directly by car, and there are regular district buses from the Çorum terminal. For ways to reach the city, see how to get to Çorum.

🏰 Main sights

  • İskilip Castle: on a steep rocky mass; the first stop for a bird's-eye view of the town.
  • Rock tombs: monumental tombs carved into the rock at the foot of the castle, with architectural decoration at the entrance. (Dated to the Roman/Paphlagonian period; the dating is debated among researchers.)
  • Grand Mosque and historic bazaar: the traditional trade and worship axis in the centre.
  • Şeyh Muhyiddin Yavsî Mosque and Tomb: the tomb of Şeyh Muhyiddin Yavsî, father of the Ottoman Şeyhülislam Ebussuud Efendi — a strong historical stop.
  • Memorial tomb of İskilipli Atıf Hoca: the memorial tomb and complex of one of İskilip's noted scholars, visited every year.
  • Timber-house streets: a walk through the historic quarters is the town's most loved feature.

🍽️ İskilip dolması

The district's culinary emblem is İskilip dolması — meat and rice slow-cooked in large cauldrons for a long time (usually 8–12 hours), the traditional dish of communal gatherings such as weddings and memorials. It received a geographical indication in 2010. İskilip is also notable for several other registered local products. As it is a long-cooked dish, it is worth calling a local restaurant ahead.

🎒 Practical tips
