Kargı Visitor Guide
With its plateaus, forests and registered tulum cheese, Kargı is northern Çorum's nature district: sights, local flavours and transport on one page.
Kargı is a district in the north of Çorum, in the Kızılırmak valley. Though it has few historic sites, Kargı is known above all for nature and highland tourism.
📍 Location and transport
Kargı is about 110 km from central Çorum, roughly a two-hour drive, reached via Osmancık on the road towards Tosya/Sinop. For ways to reach the city, see how to get to Çorum.
🌲 Nature and plateaus
- Aksu Nature Park: declared a nature park in 2021, a pine and fir forest at around 1,450 m elevation; with rich wildlife, it is a draw for hiking and picnics.
- Plateaus: Abdullah, Aksu and the surrounding highlands; suited to trekking and horseback nature routes, and cool in summer.
- The Kızılırmak and water spots: the valley around the district is good for nature and scenery.
🧀 Kargı tulum cheese and other products
The district's signature product is Kargı tulum cheese — a cheese that can be produced only in Kargı and is registered as a geographical indication (appellation of origin). Made from full-fat milk and matured for at least four months in a salted skin, the rich highland flora is reflected in its taste. Kargı is also known for its famous rice grown on the Kızılırmak plain, as well as honey and chestnuts.
🎪 The Kargı Fair
The Traditional Kargı Fair, with over a century of history, is the district's most important cultural event; usually held in autumn, it fills the town with local-produce stalls, concerts and oil wrestling. (The dates change each year; check local sources for the current date.)
🎒 Practical tips
- Time: a full nature-focused day; two days with a stay in the nature park or the fair.
- Season: late spring, summer and early autumn for the plateaus and nature park; the fair period for a cultural experience.
- Come prepared: the high plateaus can be cool even in summer, so bring layers. For tulum cheese, choose the registered, appellation-marked product.
