Mihri Hatun Hamamı (Bathhouse)

İskilip BathhouseHistoric Buildings

The Mihri Hatun Hamamı is a historic Ottoman bathhouse located in the İskilip district of Çorum, built so as to form a single whole with the Mihri Hatun Mosque standing on the same site. The building was conceived as part of a complex in which the mosque and bathhouse were planned together, serving as a center that catered to the social and religious life of the region.

History

It is reported that the bathhouse was built in the name of Mihri Hatun following her death in İskilip. The structure is dated to the 17th century, corresponding to the late phase of the Ottoman classical period. During this era, it was a widespread tradition in Anatolian cities to plan mosques, bathhouses, caravanserais, and similar structures together; bathhouses formed an important part of urban life as places for both cleansing and social gathering. The Mihri Hatun Hamamı is one of the İskilip examples of this tradition.

Throughout history, İskilip was one of Anatolia’s important settlement centers, furnished with numerous religious and civil works of architecture during the Selçuk (Seljuk) and Ottoman periods. Within this rich stock of buildings, bathhouses are among the important structures that offer clues about the daily life of the town.

Architecture

Based on the surviving ruins, it is understood that the building was constructed in a double bathhouse plan. Double bathhouses are an arrangement frequently seen in Ottoman bathhouse architecture, housing separate sections for women and men together; this plan is formed by repeating the cold room (soğukluk), warm room (ılıklık), and hot room (sıcaklık) units in both sections.

One of the most striking features of the bathhouse is its thick walls. These thick walls are connected to the bathhouses’ need for thermal insulation and also reflect the solidity of the building’s original mass. However, the structure has not been preserved in its entirety and has survived to the present day largely in a ruined and derelict state. For this reason, the original interior layout and details of the bathhouse can only be read through its ruins.

The bathhouse is situated within the same building group together with the adjacent Mihri Hatun Mosque. Located within İskilip’s historic fabric, this structure is part of the town’s civil and religious architectural heritage.

İskilip’s other bathhouse structures, the Sinan Paşa Hamamı (Bathhouse) and the Hacı Hamza Hamamı (Bathhouse), complement the town’s historic bathhouse culture as examples of a similar period and tradition. Evaluating it together with the Mihri Hatun Mosque beside it is important for understanding the building’s original function and context.
