Mihri Hatun Mosque

Kargı MosqueHistoric Buildings

Mihri Hatun Mosque is a historic place of worship located in Karakire Village, part of the Kargı district in the north of Çorum. According to local tradition, the mosque was built by the Ottoman Sultan Murad IV in memory of his wife Mihri Hatun, who fell ill and died here. In this respect, the building stands out as one of the examples bearing traces of the Ottoman period among the rural settlements of Kargı.

History

The fact that Mihri Hatun, for whom the mosque is named, lost her life in this village and that the mosque was built in her memory points to the significant place the building holds in the local memory. In Ottoman tradition, it was a common practice to commission charitable works such as mosques, prayer rooms (mescit), or fountains in memory of beloved individuals; Mihri Hatun Mosque can be regarded as a reflection of this charitable (hayrat) tradition in rural Kargı.

The mosque was destroyed in the great earthquake that struck the region in 1943 and was later rebuilt. For this reason, information about the original state of the building is quite limited, and most of the sections seen today reflect the post-earthquake reconstruction.

Architecture

The most reliable clue to the building’s original form is provided by its minaret, which survived the earthquake and preserves its original state. The minaret is constructed from neatly cut blocks of stone. Based on this stonework, it is thought that the mosque too was built of cut stone and was covered with a dome. However, since no definite information exists about the dimensions, decoration, and interior arrangement of the original building, these assessments are largely estimates based on the workmanship of the minaret.

Location and Visiting

The mosque is located in Karakire, one of the villages of the Kargı district, which is known for its forested and mountainous geography near Çorum’s Kızılırmak (Red River) valley. For visitors who wish to experience the district’s natural and historical fabric together, it is a spot that can be visited alongside the other cultural and natural assets of the region.

Among the related nearby places are the Ottoman-period monuments of Kargı: Sinan Paşa Complex, Sinan Paşa Inn, and Sinan Paşa Primary School (Taş Mektep), as well as the Oğuz Village Mosque, also in the district.
