Şapinuva Visitor Guide

A Hittite centre as important as Hattusa but far quieter: Şapinuva's place in history, what can be seen at the site, and a combined route with the İncesu Canyon.

Şapinuva (Sapinuwa) is a Hittite city in the Ortaköy district of Çorum. Though of first-rank scholarly importance, it is a "raw" site for visitors: its value comes less from grand remains than from its historical weight and the nearby nature (the İncesu Canyon).

📍 Location and transport

The site is about 3 km from the centre of Ortaköy and about 55 km from central Çorum (figures vary by source). A car is recommended; as it can be hard to find a return ride at the site, plan your return in advance. For ways to reach the city, see how to get to Çorum.

📜 Its place in history

Şapinuva was a major administrative, religious and military centre confirmed by cuneiform tablets, at times home to the Great King Tudhaliya II and Queen Taduhepa in the 14th century BC. The thousands of cuneiform tablets found here make it the second-largest tablet archive in Anatolia after Hattusa. (Whether it was a continuous "capital" or a periodic royal centre is debated among researchers.)

🏛️ What you can see at the site

The main accessible area is the administrative/archive structure known as "Building A", with its massive stone-block foundations. As excavation continues, much of the area is closed to visitors and the exposed stones can weather over time. Do not expect standing monumental structures; most of the finds and tablets are displayed in the Çorum Museum.

🥾 Combined with the İncesu Canyon

As the site itself can be seen in about half an hour, the real day-filling experience is the İncesu Canyon (~3 km) in the same district. Most visitors come more for the nature than the history; combining the two is the most rewarding plan. Both are usually free of charge.

🎒 Practical tips

  • Time: half a day for the site (itself ~30–60 min), a full day with the canyon.
  • Season: spring and autumn are ideal for both the site and the canyon walk.
  • Accommodation: limited in Ortaköy; central Çorum is a better base.
