Beke Hot Spring Bath (Beke Kaplıca Hamamı)
The Beke Hot Spring Bath (Beke Kaplıca Hamamı) is a historic thermal spring structure located near Figani Village in the Mecitözü district of Çorum. Commonly referred to among locals simply as the Beke Bath, the building in fact forms the bathhouse section of the Beke Hot Spring. In this respect, it is more than just a bathing space; it is a thermal spring facility established to make use of the region’s healing mineral water source.
Architecture
The structure was built of rough-hewn stone. As in many rural bathhouse and thermal spring buildings of Anatolia, the use of locally sourced stones, dressed and worked, was a preferred method both for durability and for its harmony with the region’s traditional construction technique. The bathhouse is covered by a dome; the domed roof, by keeping heat and steam contained within the interior, is a solution widely employed in bathhouse and thermal spring buildings. Inside the structure is a pool where the water flowing from the source collects. This pool allows visitors to benefit directly from the mineral water.
Healing Water
The Beke Hot Spring has long been favored among the local population for the effects of its water on health. Because the water emerging from the source has a diuretic effect, it is said to be effective in flushing out metabolic waste accumulated in the body and in helping pass stones from the body. The thermal spring tradition that developed around mineral water sources in Anatolia created both a culture of physical health and one of social gathering; rural sources such as Beke have thus become important visiting points for the surrounding villages.
Location and Surroundings
The bathhouse is located in the rural part of Mecitözü, near Figani Village. For more extensive information about the district’s historical and natural assets, you may refer to the History of Mecitözü page. When considered together with the Koca Mehmet Paşa Bath, which is located in the same district and offers another example of Ottoman-era bathhouse architecture, the bathhouse and water culture of Mecitözü can be understood more comprehensively. The Elvan Çelebi Zaviyesi (Lodge), one of the district’s important faith and cultural structures, is also among the nearby assets that visitors to the region can see. Those interested in similar healing water sources across Çorum in general may make a comparison with the Hamamlıçay Hot Spring, located in the central district.
