Koca Mehmet Paşa Hamamı (Bathhouse)
The Koca Mehmet Paşa Hamamı is a historic Ottoman bathhouse located in the Mecitözü district of Çorum. The building was commissioned by Koca Mehmet Paşa as a double (twin) bathhouse, together with a mosque. The fact that the bathhouse was built by the same patron as the mosque reflects the understanding of building complexes, frequently encountered in the Ottoman period, in which religious and social structures were planned together. In such complexes, the bathhouse served both to meet the cleanliness needs of the local population and to provide pious-foundation (vakıf) income toward the expenses of the mosque or külliye to which it was attached.
Architecture
The bathhouse was built according to the double (twin) bathhouse layout of Ottoman bathhouse architecture. A double bathhouse is a type of bath consisting of two sections placed side by side and arranged separately for women and men. This plan was a common solution in classical Ottoman bathhouses for separating function by gender.
The building contains the basic sections of traditional bathhouse architecture: the soğukluk (cold room), the sıcaklık (hot room) and the halvet (private chambers). The soğukluk, used as a space for undressing and resting, is covered by two small domes. Iwans (eyvan) were placed around the sıcaklık, the washing area, and this section is likewise covered by a dome. The halvet cells opening off the sıcaklık were arranged as more private washing spaces. The iwan-plan sıcaklık scheme and the domed roofing system are among the characteristic features of classical Ottoman bathhouse architecture.
Location and Function
The building is situated in the centre of Mecitözü district in such a way as to form a whole with the mosque alongside which it was built. In the fabric of Ottoman cities and towns, bathhouses were not merely places of cleanliness but also public spaces that formed an important part of social life. In settlements such as Mecitözü, structures of this kind are living examples of the region’s building activity and of the pious-foundation (vakıf) tradition.
For more information about the history and settlement past of the district, see the article History of Mecitözü. The Beke Spa Bathhouse, also located in the same district, is likewise among the region’s bathhouse structures.
