Elvan Çelebi Zaviyesi (Lodge)
The Elvan Çelebi Zaviyesi (dervish lodge) is a historic structure located in the Mecitözü district of Çorum, in the village that bears its name. Regarded as one of the first lodges established in Anatolia, the building has held an important place in the cultural life of the region through both its religious and social functions.
History
The structure was built in 1352, together with the adjoining tomb, by Elvan Çelebi, the son of Âşık Paşa. This period corresponds to the age in which, following the dissolution of the Anatolian Seljuk State, the beyliks (principalities) were on the rise and the Ottomans were still an early principality. His father, Âşık Paşa, was a renowned mystic and poet who made a great contribution to the development of the Turkish language in Anatolia and was the author of the mystical work titled Garibnâme. Elvan Çelebi, as a continuator of this cultural and spiritual legacy, became known as a dervish and poet who carried on his father’s path.
Lodges (zaviye) were institutions that played an important role in the process of Turkification and Islamization of Anatolia. Situated along travel routes, these structures provided lodging to travelers, offered religious and social services to the surrounding population, and at the same time served as centers of culture and learning. From its founding, the Elvan Çelebi Zaviyesi took on these functions as well, and over time the settlement that grew up around it took on the name of the structure.
Architecture
The lodge was built with rubble-stone walls, in keeping with the prevalent building tradition of the period and the region. Covered by a dome, the structure reflects a plain and sturdy architectural understanding. Beside the building stands the tomb of its founder, Elvan Çelebi; in this respect, the structure is among the examples of early Anatolian architecture that bring a lodge and a tomb together. Having changed function over the centuries, the building was later converted into a mosque and is still kept open for worship as a mosque today.
Location and Visiting
The structure is located in the village of Elvan Çelebi, which is part of the central Mecitözü district. It is a point worth visiting both for faith tourism and for enthusiasts of historic buildings. Together with the other cultural and historical assets in the surrounding area, it bears witness to the region’s past.
