The Municipality Building

Located in the centre of the city of Çorum, the Municipality Building was constructed in the early years of the Republic and, through the various changes of function it has undergone, has borne witness to the recent history of the city. Its architecture reflects the formal and symmetrical approach that was widespread in the public buildings of the period.

Architecture

The building was constructed in the neo-classical style adopted in the early years of the Republic. This style is particularly evident in the pointed-arch windows that encircle the building on all sides. The ground-floor windows are round-arched, while the windows on the second floor are designed as paired (twin) windows. Cut stone was used for the walls of this two-storey building, which is covered by a wooden roof. The cut-stone craftsmanship and the orderly arrangement of the windows highlight the monumental and official character of the structure.

History

In the early years of the Republic, following the closure of the medreses, a civil society organisation established under the name “Special Construction Commission for the Library Building” had this building constructed as a library in 1923. The structure was not limited to its function as a library alone; music lessons were also given here, while its ground floor was used for private businesses. Thus, from its very founding, the building became a multifaceted centre of the city’s cultural and social life.

Over time, the use of the building changed. In 1938 the library was moved down to the ground floor, and the upper floor was used entirely as the Çorum Halkevi (People’s House). The Halkevleri (People’s Houses) were institutions where public education, cultural and artistic activities were carried out in the Turkey of that era; for this reason, the building long remained a focal point of the city’s cultural life. After the People’s Houses were closed in the 1950s, when the courthouse burned down, this place was used for judicial services until a new courthouse was built. From September 1960 onwards, the building began to serve as the municipality building, a function it has maintained to the present day.

Location and Visiting

The building stands in a central position within Çorum’s historic urban fabric. Having housed various public functions such as a library, People’s House, courthouse and municipality makes it a tangible document of the city’s recent administrative and cultural history. It is possible to see the city’s historic buildings gathered together in its surroundings.
