Veli Paşa Han (Caravanserai)
Veli Paşa Han is a historic lodging structure located in the city center of Çorum, in the Çephi Quarter, on Sandıkçılar Street. Set within the traditional urban fabric, the han was built by Veli Paşa, the Beylerbey (governor-general) of Yozgat of the period. It takes its name from the very man who had it built.
History
There is no inscription on the building that definitively gives its date of construction or its patron. Nevertheless, its architectural style and the characteristics of its stone and timber workmanship clearly reveal that it is a work belonging to the 19th century. This period was a phase in which commercial life in the Ottoman provinces became increasingly active, and in which hans, covered markets (bedestens), and bazaar structures spread around caravan routes and marketplaces. Veli Paşa Han can be assessed within this tradition of late-period Ottoman commercial buildings; it has the character of a structure that simultaneously served such functions as the lodging of travelers, the storage of goods, and the conduct of trade.
Architecture
The han covers a broad area of approximately 1,000 m² and is arranged on two storeys, predominantly in a timber-frame construction. The pavilion section facing the front façade, however, rises to three storeys in height; this differentiation gives the building a dynamic and striking appearance. The stonework used in the body walls was executed with the rough-hewn and rubble-stone technique, and the exterior surfaces were covered with plaster.
While most Ottoman hans were conceived in masonry with an arcaded scheme around a courtyard, Veli Paşa Han’s structure—in which timber material is dominant and the top is covered with a roof—places it in a distinctive position within classical han architecture. In this respect, the building stands out both as a commercial structure and as an example bearing the traces of Çorum’s civil architectural tradition.
Location and Visiting
The han is located within Çorum’s old settlement fabric, in a position that follows the traditional line of the street. With this location, it is a point that can be visited together with the other cultural assets in the historic center of the city.
When considered together with surrounding structures of a similar period and type, it can be examined within the same historic fabric as the Çorum Clock Tower, the Çorum Grand Mosque (Murad-ı Rabi Mosque), and the traditional Çorum Houses in central Çorum. For another example of the same type of building, one may look to the Sinan Paşa Han in Kargı.
