Han Mosque (Han Camisi)
Han Mosque is a historic place of worship located in the Tepecik neighborhood in the city center of Çorum and dating to the 16th century. According to the sources, the mosque was built in 1580, making it one of the classical-period structures erected within the neighborhood fabric that developed in Çorum during the Ottoman era. It is thought to take its name from the surrounding tradition of commercial construction or from the nearby caravanserai (han) buildings; such mosques bearing the name “han” are frequently encountered in Anatolian towns in areas where bazaars and accommodation structures were concentrated.
History
It is known that the mosque was built in 1580. This date coincides with a period when the classical architectural era of the Ottoman Empire was ongoing and when neighborhood-scale masjids and mosques were being widely built in Anatolian towns. Throughout history, Çorum held importance in terms of trade and settlement because it lay on the roads connecting Central Anatolia with the Black Sea region; many religious and civil buildings from this period have been preserved in the town to the present day.
Architecture
The mosque was built of rubble stone, a construction technique widespread in the region. It has a square-plan prayer hall covered by a single dome. The single-domed square plan is a plain and balanced scheme frequently preferred for neighborhood-scale buildings in Ottoman mosque architecture. In front of the building there is a four-bay porch (son cemaat yeri); this section is a covered space where the congregation gathers at prayer times and which precedes the mosque’s main entrance.
In the courtyard stands an ablution fountain (şadırvan) with a conical dome and columns. The şadırvan, the element at which ablutions are performed, is one of the indispensable features of mosque courtyards and shows that the building carries a complex-like (külliye) unity. The rubble-stone masonry, the plain mass and the single-domed construction reflect that the building has the character of a functional neighborhood mosque, far removed from ostentation.
