Kubbeli Cami (Domed Mosque)

Merkez MosqueHistoric Buildings

Kubbeli Cami is a historic place of worship located in the Yavru Turna neighborhood of central Çorum. It takes its name from the single dome that covers the prayer hall (harim). Set within Çorum’s traditional neighborhood fabric, the mosque is counted among the city’s surviving examples of Ottoman-era religious architecture.

History

The mosque’s original construction date and its patron (the person who commissioned it) are not known with certainty. The main reason for this is that the original foundation inscription documenting the building’s construction date and patron has not survived. The only surviving written document is a repair inscription indicating that the mosque was restored in 1883. While this inscription shows that the building underwent a repair on that date, it provides no direct information about the period of its initial construction. The existence of the repair inscription suggests that the mosque had been standing for a long time before that date.

As with many Anatolian mosques that lack a foundation inscription, assessments of Kubbeli Cami’s construction period rely chiefly on its architectural and material features. Çorum was an important settlement center during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods, and numerous neighborhood mosques were built within the urban fabric.

Architecture

The mosque has a square-plan prayer hall, and this space is covered by a single dome. The dome set over a square plan is a common application of the Ottoman tradition of single-domed masjids and mosques; this arrangement is a simple, balanced solution frequently preferred in neighborhood-scale mosques.

Yellow köfeki stone was used in the building’s walls. Köfeki stone is a building material favored in many historic structures across Anatolia because of its workability and durability. The mosque’s plain mass and its roofing system are the principal features that distinguish it among Çorum’s traditional neighborhood mosques.
