Hanönü Mosque

İskilip MosqueHistoric Buildings

Hanönü Mosque is a historic place of worship located in İskilip, one of Çorum’s long-established districts. İskilip is a center that lies within Anatolia’s early settlement geography and has, throughout history, been home to various civilizations and, during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods, to a rich architecture of mosques, baths, and madrasas. Hanönü Mosque is part of this multi-layered cultural fabric of the district.

History

Because the mosque’s inscription has not survived, it is not known with certainty when or by whom it was built. Moreover, no records relating to the mosque have been found in the foundation (waqf) registers. As is the case with many neighborhood and village mosques in Anatolia, this situation has left the building’s construction date and its founder uncertain. The absence of primary documents such as an inscription or a foundation deed (vakfiye) means that dating the building must rely largely on its architectural and material features.

Architecture

The mosque has a square plan and was built using cut stone and brick. Its top, as in many timber-roofed mosques in Anatolia, is covered with a wooden roof. The most striking aspect of the building is the woodwork and ceiling ornamentation in its interior; these features place the mosque within the tradition of traditional woodworking.

Beside the mosque stands a minaret with a round shaft and a single balcony (şerefe), set upon a square base. This minaret form reflects the plain and balanced style encountered in many traditional mosque structures in the region.

Location and Visiting

The building is situated within the historic neighborhood fabric of İskilip’s town center. İskilip’s narrow streets, traditional houses, and numerous historic structures make up the cultural setting in which Hanönü Mosque is found. Those touring the district have the opportunity to see this mosque along with other examples of religious and civil architecture in the area.
