Evlik Köyü Mosque

İskilip MosqueHistoric Buildings

The Evlik Köyü Mosque is a historic place of worship located in the village of Evlik, in the İskilip district of Çorum. According to local tradition, the mosque was built by the son of the renowned Ottoman scholar and mystic Akşemseddin. In this respect, the building bears traces of the religious and cultural life of İskilip and its surroundings during the early Ottoman period.

History

The mosque is dated to the 15th century. This period corresponds to an age in which Anatolia was largely unified under Ottoman rule, and in which religious structures such as mosques, masjids, and madrasas became widespread in the İskilip region. Considering the role Akşemseddin (1390-1459) played as the tutor of Fatih Sultan Mehmed during the conquest of Istanbul, and the spiritual activities he carried out in the area around Göynük in the following period, the presence of a structure attributed to his family in this region points to the area’s connection with the Sufi and scholarly circles of the era.

Owing to the repairs and additions it has undergone over many centuries, the building has reached the present day in a form quite far removed from its original appearance. This shares the common fate of many historic village mosques in rural areas; these structures, periodically renovated according to the needs of their communities, have for the most part preserved only a portion of their original built form.

Architecture

The mosque was built on a square plan. Its top was later covered with a timber roof through a subsequent intervention, which indicates that the building’s original covering system was altered. Beside the mosque stands a minaret with a round shaft resting on a stone base. The form of a round-shafted minaret rising on a stone base is a practice frequently seen in the region’s traditional village mosque architecture.

With its plain and functional design, the building has the character of a village mosque oriented toward local needs rather than ostentation. Its construction materials and techniques reflect the region’s traditional architectural understanding, based on the use of stone and timber.

The mosque is located in the village of Evlik, within the İskilip district center. İskilip is one of the districts in the northwest of Çorum that stands out for its historical and cultural riches.
