Yeni Mosque (New Mosque)

İskilip MosqueHistoric Buildings

Yeni Mosque is one of the Ottoman-era neighborhood mosques located in the İskilip district of Çorum. According to the sources, the building was commissioned in the 18th century by Kazasker Cafer Efendi. As its name (meaning “New Mosque”) suggests, it was built in a comparatively late period relative to the district’s older mosques, and it forms part of İskilip’s multi-layered religious architectural heritage.

History

İskilip has been home to a variety of civilizations beginning with the Hittite period, and it developed as an important settlement and center of learning during the Seljuk and Ottoman eras. The district possesses a dense historic fabric adorned with numerous mosques, madrasas, inns, and bathhouses. Yeni Mosque stands out within this fabric as a later Ottoman structure. The name of its patron, Kazasker Cafer Efendi, points to the mosque’s connection with İskilip’s scholarly (ilmiye) tradition; however, detailed records of the endowment (vakıf) and inscriptions from this period are limited in the sources.

Architecture

The mosque has a square plan and is covered by a single dome. This plan scheme is a layout commonly seen in small-scale Ottoman neighborhood mosques. Both stone and brick were used together in the walls of the building; this alternating masonry (almaşık) is a practice frequently encountered in Ottoman provincial architecture. Its mihrab and minbar bear no notable decoration or distinguishing feature, and the interior arrangement is plain.

Beside the mosque stands its minaret, set on a square stone base. The minaret has a cylindrical shaft and a single balcony (şerefe) and is built of brick. The brick shaft rising above the stone base is, again, a choice that reflects the construction technique of the period.

Location and Visiting

Yeni Mosque is located within the historic settlement at the center of İskilip district and is within walking distance of the district’s other religious and civil structures. Together with its traditional Çorum houses, its castle, and the surrounding highland pastures, İskilip offers a cohesive touring route.

For those who wish to see the district’s other mosques and historic buildings, prominent stops in the immediate vicinity include the Ulu (Grand) Mosque, the Tabakhane Mosque, the Şeyh Muhiddin Yavsi Mosque, and the Hanönü Mosque.
