Hilmi Efendi Mosque
The Hilmi Efendi Mosque is a neighborhood mosque located in the İsmet Paşa quarter of the Sungurlu district of Çorum. The building takes its name from its founder and was built in 1960 by Hilmi Efendi. It is one of the charitable structures erected in the later years of the Republican period to meet the worship needs that arose at the neighborhood level.
Architecture
The mosque is a simple structure with a rectangular plan and a timber roof. It has no monumental architectural feature of note, presenting instead a modest layout in keeping with the regional mosque tradition of the period. With this simplicity, the Hilmi Efendi Mosque differs from the domed and monumental examples of classical Ottoman mosque architecture; it carries the character of a functional neighborhood masjid intended above all for the daily worship needs of the local people. Mosques of this type, with timber roofs and masonry bodies, are a widespread building form seen in many settlements across Anatolia.
Repair and Conservation
The building was repaired in 1997 by the General Directorate of Foundations (Vakıflar Genel Müdürlüğü), roughly forty years after its construction. This repair is significant in terms of ensuring the maintenance and continuous use of the mosque. Thanks to this intervention, carried out as part of the General Directorate of Foundations’ conservation and restoration work on religious and historic buildings nationwide, the mosque has survived to the present day open for worship.
Location
The mosque is situated within the urban fabric of Sungurlu, in the İsmet Paşa quarter. Sungurlu is a district with deep historical roots, lying to the west of Çorum on the main Ankara–Samsun route.
