Ulu Cami (Sungurlu Grand Mosque)
Ulu Cami is a place of worship located in the Sungurlu neighborhood of the Sungurlu district of Çorum, and it is counted among the district’s most important historic buildings. According to information based on its inscription, the mosque was built by Mehmet Sungur Bey in 1762. This date places the structure as a work from a period close to the final quarter of the Ottoman era and points to the mosque’s deep-rooted past within the settlement history of Sungurlu.
History
The 18th century, when the structure was built, was a period in which charitable foundation works such as mosques, prayer rooms (mescit), and fountains spread across the Ottoman countryside at the hands of local notables. This mosque, built by Mehmet Sungur Bey, is one of the Sungurlu examples of that tradition of pious endowments. For a broader perspective on the district’s historical development and settlement fabric, see the article History of Sungurlu.
Architecture
The mosque rises in the middle of a wide courtyard. Roughly hewn stone was used in the wall masonry, and this construction technique gives the building a plain and sturdy appearance. The upper covering of the prayer hall consists of a main dome resting on a tall drum in the center and three small domes surrounding this dome. The domed covering arrangement reflects the centrally planned mosque conception of the period.
In front of the mosque is a portico (son cemaat yeri), where worshippers wait for prayer times. The minaret rising beside the structure is a single-balcony minaret with a round shaft built of brick, resting on a square stone base. The combined use of a stone base and a brick shaft is a practice seen in many Ottoman-era mosques in the region.
Restorations
The mosque has undergone maintenance and repair over time. The restorations carried out by the General Directorate of Foundations (Vakıflar Genel Müdürlüğü) in 1984 and 1994 ensured that the building has reached the present day with its original qualities preserved. These works contributed both to the mosque continuing its function as a place of worship and to its preservation as a historical monument.
