Kavşut Mosque

Kavşut Mosque is a historic place of worship located in the Sungurlu district of Çorum and dating to the Seljuk period. It is regarded as a small-scale example of the mosques that have survived in Anatolia from the Seljuk era to the present day, continuing the tradition of a flat roof carried by timber columns (wooden supports). This building type bears the traces of the plain and functional mosque architecture seen in similar forms throughout many settlements of Central Anatolia.

Architecture

The mosque has a rectangular plan and is covered by a roof supported by timber columns. A roofed portico (son cemaat yeri, the area for latecomers) supported by timber columns has been added to its front. The same wooden roof covers both the portico and the prayer hall of the mosque; this gives the building an integrated and simple appearance. The prayer hall is lit by a single rectangular window on each side.

The mosque’s mihrab (prayer niche) and minbar (pulpit) do not display any distinctive architectural features. Its stone minaret was built in recent times and is not in harmony with the building’s original timber fabric and plain mass. Such later-added minarets stand apart from the original character of the building in a similar way at many old village and town mosques across Anatolia.

Historical Value

The mosque’s original minbar and minbar door, made in the kündekâri technique and belonging to the Seljuk period, have not survived to the present day. Kündekâri is one of the most advanced woodworking techniques of the Seljuk and early Ottoman periods, in which wooden pieces are joined together by interlocking without the use of nails or glue. The use of this technique shows that, in its original state, the building was a valuable example reflecting the woodcraft of its era. The loss of the original minbar caused the mosque to lose part of its artistic value; nevertheless, with its roof system and overall plan, the building retains its importance for the region’s mosque architecture.

Location and Surroundings

Kavşut Mosque lies within the boundaries of the Sungurlu district. Sungurlu is a district to the west of Çorum, situated on the historic road route connecting Ankara and Çorum, and has been inhabited since ancient times. For more information about the district’s historical and cultural fabric, see the article History of Sungurlu.

When considered together with the other historic places of worship in the district, Kavşut Mosque forms a part of the region’s religious architectural heritage. Among the related nearby buildings are Ulu Mosque (Sungurlu), Hilmi Efendi Mosque and Ergülü Baba Mosque.
