İstiklal Primary School

İstiklâl Primary School is a historic school building located in the city center of Çorum that displays the characteristics of late Ottoman-period educational structures. It is regarded as part of the city’s cultural heritage both for its architectural qualities and for its place in Çorum’s recent educational history.

History

The building was constructed between 1913 and 1915 by Nurettin Bey, the district governor (mutasarrıf) of the period, under the name “Mecidiye Mektebi.” This naming is connected to the tradition of the mektep (school), which was established in the late Ottoman period and reflected a modern understanding of education. After the proclamation of the Republic, the school’s name was changed to “İstiklâl Primary School” in 1925. This change of name can be seen as a reflection of the restructuring that the newly founded Republic of Turkey undertook in the field of education, as well as the tendency to favor names that emphasized national values.

According to the sources, the site where the present-day school stands previously held a medrese (Islamic school) and a library built in AH 1326 (1908). This is noteworthy in that it shows the area in question has continuously served an educational and cultural function since the late Ottoman period.

Architecture

The building was designed with three stories together with a square-plan basement. Yellow sandstone and cut stone were used as building materials. The use of yellow sandstone on the exterior façades, the floor moldings, and the door and window jambs gives the building a distinctive and unified appearance.

The structure has two entrances, one of which projects outward from the façade. The roof is a hipped roof. There is a differentiation in the window arrangement between floors: the lower floors have round-arched windows, while the upper floor has rectangular-framed windows, with two windows on each side. This regular arrangement of windows and the stonework reflect the measured and symmetrical understanding characteristic of the public educational buildings of the period.

The school is in the city center of Çorum and stands within the same urban fabric as the other historic buildings concentrated in the center. For those wishing to see Çorum’s late Ottoman and early Republican architecture together, it can be considered alongside the other monuments in the center.

Those interested in Çorum’s educational and cultural history can examine this school comparatively with the Old Health School (Eski Sıhhat Mektebi) in the center. For the city’s civil architecture, Çorum Houses, and for public buildings, the Municipality Building and the Çorum Clock Tower are other notable examples that can be seen in the immediate vicinity.
