The Şeyh Muhiddin Yavsi Mosque is a historic Ottoman structure located within the Meydan Çarşısı (Town Square Market) in the İskilip district of Çorum. The mosque was originally built as a single-domed building by Şeyh Muhiddin Yavsi, one of the prominent religious and scholarly figures of his time. With both its architectural features and the deep-rooted scholarly tradition of its founder, the structure stands among İskilip’s most notable historical monuments.

History

The mosque dates to the 15th century. Şeyh Muhiddin Yavsi, who had it built, was the father of Şeyhülislam Ebussuud Efendi, one of the most renowned figures in Ottoman intellectual and legal history. According to tradition, the father of Şeyh Muhiddin Yavsi, Mustafa, was the brother of Ali Kuşçu, the famous mathematician and astronomer of the period. In this respect, the mosque is more than a place of worship; it also serves as a memorial reflecting the connection between İskilip and a distinguished scholarly family of the Ottoman classical age.

Originally built with a single dome, the prayer hall of the mosque was later enlarged by Ebussuud Efendi. As part of this work, a new section was added alongside the existing prayer area, and this section was also covered with a dome. The structure thus acquired the appearance of two domes resting on drums and has survived to the present day in this form.

Architecture

The mosque was built using cut stone and brick. This choice of materials is a practice frequently seen in Ottoman provincial architecture, favored for both its durability and its aesthetic qualities. The most distinctive feature of the structure is its two-domed arrangement, which emerged with the later added section; both domes rest on drums.

A minaret with a round shaft, a single balcony, and a stone base was added beside the mosque. Immediately nearby, in keeping with the tradition of the period, there are two small tombs. These tombs are regarded as a tangible expression of the respect held for the mosque’s founder and the scholars who surrounded him.

Location and Visiting

The mosque is situated in the Meydan Çarşısı, the center of İskilip’s commerce and daily life. This location has kept the structure embedded in the life of the town, both in the past and today. It is part of a historic route that can be explored among İskilip’s narrow streets and traditional urban fabric.
