Oğuz Köyü Mosque is a historic place of worship located in Oğuz Köyü, a village in the Kargı district of Çorum. No definitive record has survived regarding who commissioned the mosque, and both its patron and its founding date remain unknown. Nevertheless, based on the building’s architectural style, it is thought to have been constructed in the 16th century.

History

Since neither an inscription nor an endowment (vakfiye) record is known for the mosque, its dating rests largely on its architectural features. These features point to the period when classical Ottoman architecture was widespread and suggest that the building may belong to the 16th century. During the Ottoman period, the Kargı region lay along the historic route connecting Kastamonu with Central Anatolia; this position laid the groundwork for the construction of numerous endowment (vakıf) buildings in the area, such as inns, baths, schools, and mosques. Oğuz Köyü Mosque is one of the village-scale examples of this building tradition.

Architecture

The structure belongs to the group of single-domed mosques in Ottoman architecture. In front of the mosque is a portico (son cemaat yeri); this section, set aside for worshippers who remain outside the main hall during busy prayer times, is one of the characteristic elements of the classical Ottoman mosque plan. The prayer hall is covered by a central dome supported by three vaulted half-domes. This covering arrangement serves as an example of how the central-domed scheme was applied in small-scale rural mosques.

Owing to the repairs and interventions it has undergone over time, the mosque has moved significantly away from its original fabric. This is a problem commonly faced by historic buildings in rural areas; additions made as needed and changes in materials have largely altered the building’s early appearance.

Location and Visiting

The mosque is located in Oğuz Köyü, in the countryside of the Kargı district center. Complementing the district’s historic fabric, this building—when considered together with the other Ottoman-era works in the region—offers insight into Kargı’s past settlement and endowment culture.

It can be visited together with the other historic buildings in the district. Nearby and related places include Mihri Hatun Mosque, Sinan Paşa Külliye (Complex), Sinan Paşa Inn, and Sinan Paşa Sıbyan Mektebi (Stone School). For the district’s general history, see the History of Kargı page.
