Sinan Paşa Sıbyan Mektebi (The Stone School)
The Sinan Paşa Sıbyan Mektebi, popularly known as the Stone School (Taş Mektep), is an Ottoman-era educational building located in the Kargı district of Çorum. The structure was built as part of the Sinan Paşa Complex, which was constructed in 1506-1507 during the reign of Sultan Bayezid II.
History
The school was built during the classical Ottoman period, an age in which the complexes (külliye) founded by statesmen and benefactors became widespread. Sıbyan mektepleri (primary schools) were one of the cornerstones of the Ottoman education system; they were first-level schools where children were taught basic religious knowledge, reading and writing, and Qur’an instruction. These schools were most often located within a complex—a holistic charitable foundation (vakıf) institution—together with a mosque, inn, bathhouse, or madrasa. As an example of this tradition in Kargı, the Stone School served as a unit that complemented the social and educational function of the Sinan Paşa Complex.
Architecture
The primary school is a single-section building. Entered through a doorway with a depressed (segmental) arch, the school has a square plan and a vaulted covering. Its walls were built using a technique combining cut stone and rubble stone, which explains why the building is known by the name “Stone School.” A single-space, plain, and functional plan is a typical characteristic of the primary schools of the period: the aim was not ostentation but rather the creation of a durable and modest space capable of providing education to a small group of students at the neighborhood scale. The use of cut stone at defining points such as the doorway and corners, and rubble stone in the wall infill, is an economical construction method that reflects the region’s tradition of stone craftsmanship.
Location and Place Within the Complex
The building is located in the mountainous and forested Kargı district to the north of Çorum. The school should be considered not as an independent work but as part of the complex founded in the name of Sinan Paşa. When examined together with the other units of the complex, one can better understand how a charitable foundation of the period brought together the functions of education, worship, and lodging.
