The Sinan Paşa Külliyesi is an early Ottoman building complex located in the district of Kargı, in the north of Çorum, that brings together several structures in a single setting. According to the inscription on the complex, the building was commissioned by Sinan Paşa during the reign of Sultan Bayezid II in 1506-1507. The complex consists of a mosque, a madrasa, a primary school (sıbyan mektebi), a bathhouse and an inn. The gathering of educational, religious, sanitary and lodging functions around a mosque by a charitable founder is a typical example of the classical Ottoman külliye (complex) tradition.

History

The period in which the complex was built coincides with a transitional phase when the Ottoman State’s construction activities in Anatolia were intensifying and the classical architectural style was beginning to mature. The reign of Bayezid II was a time when the building of mosques and complexes increased in many Anatolian cities, foremost among them İstanbul. In settlements situated along historic travel routes, such as Kargı, the addition of structures like inns and bathhouses to a complex was intended to meet the needs of both the local population and the caravans and travelers passing through.

Architecture

The most striking structure of the complex, the mosque, belongs to the group of centrally planned mosques in Ottoman architecture. Another important feature of this mosque is that this type of plan was experimented with here for the first time in Anatolia. The central dome covering the prayer hall is supported by four slender columns. The main dome is reinforced by half-domes on the sides and by four small domes at the corners. This arrangement of domes ensures that the weight is distributed in a balanced way and presents an early example of the centralized-space concept that would later be developed in classical-period Ottoman mosques.

The mosque is built of cut stone and rubble stone. The base of the minaret is of cut stone, while its shaft is of round brick and has a single balcony (şerefe). The madrasa that once surrounded the mosque’s courtyard has not survived to the present day. This situation resembles that of many Ottoman complexes in Anatolia, which over time lost some of their sections due to earthquakes, abandonment and lack of repair.

Location and Visiting

The complex is located in the center of the district of Kargı, in the north of Çorum, in a setting close to the valley of the Kızılırmak (Red River). Other structures that complete this charitable foundation work can also be found in the area. Part of the same foundation, the Sinan Paşa Han (Inn) and the Sinan Paşa Primary School (Taş Mektep / Stone School) are other important elements that reflect the multifunctional character of the complex. Together with the Mihri Hatun Mosque and the Oğuz Village Mosque in Kargı, it is possible to gain a comprehensive understanding of the district’s Ottoman-period religious architecture.
