Sazak Cave

Merkez CaveHistoric Buildings

Sazak Cave is one of the natural caves found within the borders of the central (Merkez) district of Çorum. It is situated on a rock mass about 500 metres from the Saçayak gorge. Like many caves around Çorum, it was formed by the gradual erosion of a predominantly limestone rock structure over time, and it was used by people in the past.

Location

The cave lies on a rocky rise near the Saçayak gorge. The Çorum region has a rugged geography divided by deep valleys and gorges; such rock formations have given rise to numerous caves and rock shelters in the area. The cave’s position atop the rock marks a point well suited for both defence and observation.

Features

Inside the cave there are hearth spots and rock-cut benches. These traces show that the cave was more than just a natural formation, having been used in the past for shelter or temporary refuge. The hearth spots point to the need for warmth and cooking, while the benches carved into or arranged within the rock indicate a use for sitting and resting. As in many parts of Anatolia, the rock spaces around Çorum have throughout history served as refuges, shelters and, at times, places of religious purpose.

Caves in the Vicinity

Central Çorum and its surroundings are quite rich in natural caves. The great majority of these caves were formed under similar geological conditions and are significant for the region’s history of settlement and shelter. Sazak Cave is regarded as part of this group of caves.

Among the nearby places of a similar character are Kılıçören Cave, Alköy Cave, Molla Hasan and Kadıderesi Cave and Gerdek Kaya Cave. For those who wish to see the region’s natural and historical heritage in full, the Çorum Museum is also an important point of reference.
