Molla Hasan and Kadıderesi Cave

The Molla Hasan and Kadıderesi Cave is a natural formation located within the boundaries of the Merkez (Central) district of Çorum. Notable for its structure of three branches arranged side by side, the cave lies about 1 km from the nearest settlement, a village.

Location and Geography

The cave is situated in the rugged terrain of the Çorum region, in the northern part of Central Anatolia, within the transition zone toward the North Anatolian Mountains. The limestone (karstic) structure of the area provides favorable ground for the formation of numerous caves, sinkholes and underground voids, as groundwater dissolves the rock over long periods of time. The Molla Hasan and Kadıderesi Cave is one of the formations shaped by these karstic processes.

Structure

The most distinctive feature of the cave is that it has developed in the form of three separate arms or branches lined up side by side. Such multi-branched caves occur where water advances along different cracks and fault lines, carving out galleries independently of one another. Its position close to the village suggests that the cave was a point known to local people in the past and easily accessible.

Central Çorum and its surroundings host a large number of caves due to their karstic structure. These caves are part of the region’s geographical and cultural heritage, both for their natural beauty and, in some cases, for having been used as shelters or storage spaces. Most of the caves are not developed as tourism facilities and retain their natural state; for this reason, it is recommended to be cautious and to use appropriate equipment when visiting.
