Yeni Kışla Cave

Merkez CaveHistoric Buildings

Yeni Kışla Cave is a natural cave located near the village of Yeni Kışla in the Merkez (Central) district of Çorum. The cave’s interior cavity reaches a height of 8-10 metres, a feature that places it among the region’s most notable underground formations.

Location

The cave lies about one kilometre from the village of Yeni Kışla, after which it is named. Its relative proximity to the city centre of Çorum and its position adjacent to the village settlement make it comparatively easier to reach than many other rural caves. Çorum and its surroundings, owing to their geological structure, form a region home to numerous natural caves and underground cavities, and these formations are among the characteristic features of the local geography.

Formation and Structure

Like many caves in the region, Yeni Kışla Cave is an example of the karstic formations that result from groundwater eroding limestone (calcareous) bedrock over long geological periods. In such caves, dripstone formations (stalactites and stalagmites) can develop over time, along with galleries and chambers at varying heights. The cave’s interior height of 8-10 metres indicates the presence of a large cavity inside.

In Anatolia, caves have throughout history been more than mere natural formations; they have also been used for shelter, refuge, storage and, at times, religious purposes. The fact that the Çorum region has had an uninterrupted history of settlement since the Hatti and Hittite periods suggests that the area’s natural shelters may have been put to various uses in the past. Nevertheless, there is no definitive record concerning this cave’s use in earlier times.

Visiting

Yeni Kışla Cave is a formation preserved in its natural state rather than a developed tourist facility. For this reason, visits require suitable footwear, lighting and caution; the interiors of karstic caves can be damp and slippery.

Among the other natural caves within the boundaries of central Çorum are Kılıçören Cave, Sazak Cave, Alköy Cave and Gerdek Kaya Cave. For the general historical and geographical context of the region, the Çorum Museum is also well worth a visit.
