Alköy Cave

Merkez CaveHistoric Buildings

Alköy Cave is a historic structure hand-carved into rock, located near Alköy in the Cemilbey sub-district of central Çorum. The cave stands out for being cut some 4 metres above the ground and shaped quite neatly. This feature shows that the cave is a space formed by human hands rather than a natural formation.

Location

The structure lies in the northeastern part of Çorum, within the rocky terrain around Alköy in Cemilbey. Because Çorum and its surroundings have soft rock layers owing to their geological structure, the region contains numerous caves, shelters and rock-cut spaces carved into the stone. Alköy Cave is one of the typical examples of this landscape.

Features

Positioning the cave high above the ground is a practice frequently seen in rock-cut spaces. In such structures, raising the entrance made it easier to protect the space against both the elements and possible dangers. Throughout history, rock-cut spaces in Anatolia were used for shelter, hiding, storage and, at times, religious purposes. Some of the similar caves in the Çorum region bear traces of settlement and refuge stretching back to early periods; however, detailed information about the function and exact construction date of Alköy Cave is limited.

The neatness of the carving suggests that those who created the space invested a certain plan and effort. In this respect, the cave is regarded as one of the cultural heritage elements reflecting the region’s rock-carving tradition.
