Aycan Önel
Aycan Önel (17 April 1933, Çorum) is a Turkish national athlete who represented Turkey in the women’s 100 metres at the 1960 Rome Olympics.
Athletics Career
According to the official list of the Çorum Directorate of Culture and Tourism, Önel began athletics in 1946 and set her first Turkish record, in the 80-metre hurdles, in 1948. Over her career she set Turkish records in the 100 metres, 200 metres, long jump, shot put, discus and pentathlon, represented the national team for many years, and captained the women’s national team.
Independent sources record that Önel competed at the 1957 AAA Championships in England, becoming, together with Gül Çıray, one of the first Turkish women to compete in the United Kingdom. She was part of the national team competing in the women’s 100 metres at the 1960 Rome Olympics.
