İncesu Canyon

İncesu Canyon is a natural canyon located in the village of İncesu, in the Ortaköy district of Çorum, formed over time as flowing waters eroded limestone and similar rocks, gradually deepening the channel. It is regarded as one of the most striking geological and natural formations in the region.

Location and Geography

The canyon stretches around the village of İncesu and has a total length of approximately 12.5 kilometers. Its width varies in places between 40 and 60 meters. Having only a single entrance and exit is a distinctive feature of the steep formation that surrounds it. With both slopes consisting of sheer, rugged cliffs, the canyon forms a narrow passage along its deep channel. Such canyons come into being when, over long geological periods, water cuts through rocks and carves downward; İncesu Canyon is one of the examples of this natural process in the geography of Çorum.

Nature and Vegetation

Thanks to its steep slopes and relatively sheltered structure, a rich natural fabric is found within and around the canyon. The rocky walls contribute to the formation of microclimate conditions particular to the canyon. This structure makes the region attractive both for its scenic value and for hiking.

Visiting and Outdoor Sports

Depending on seasonal conditions, İncesu Canyon offers features suitable for outdoor sports such as rafting and trekking. When water levels rise, river sports come to the fore, while in drier periods hiking and nature observation take precedence. Because of its steep terrain, visitors are advised to take seasonal conditions and safety precautions into account.

The canyon can be appreciated alongside the natural and cultural assets of the Ortaköy district. Those visiting the area can also take a look at the History of Ortaköy for the district’s historical fabric and at the nearby major archaeological center Şapinuva. Among similar natural areas across Çorum, Laçin Recreation Area and Çatak Nature Park are notable examples.
