KargıNature & TrailsNatural Area

The Kös Dağı Wildlife Development Area (Yaban Hayatı Geliştirme Sahası, YHGS) is a protected area around Mount Kös in the Kargı district, declared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The page of the 11th Regional Directorate lists “Kös Dağı Yaban Hayatı Geliştirme Sahası (Kargı)” as Çorum’s wildlife development area; the Ministry’s nationwide list of wildlife development areas gives the same area as “Çorum Kargı Koşdağ YHGS”. The spelling of the name varies between sources: Kös Dağı, Kösdağ, Koşdağ.

Declaration and area

According to the Ministry’s list of wildlife development areas, the monitoring activity for the area concerns roe deer, its size is 1,962 hectares and its declaration date is 16.10.2005; the list includes dozens of areas declared on the same date. The Regional Directorate’s page for the area holds nothing beyond its title; the source gives no information on the area’s boundaries, access or visiting conditions.

Inventory survey (2017)

According to a report of 24 November 2017 relaying the Çorum Nature Conservation and National Parks Directorate, an inventory survey was carried out in the area on 9 November 2017 on the General Directorate’s instructions, with members of the Abdullah Village Agricultural Development Cooperative taking part. The count recorded 28 red deer and 26 roe deer among the target species; 19 wild boar and 2 foxes seen in the area were also entered in the inventory. The Directorate’s statement says that compared with the inventory of the previous year the red deer population had grown by 8.3 percent a year and roe deer by 13.2 percent a year; officials attributed the rise to the area being protected by the local people and to little poaching.

The Ministry’s list gives only roe deer as the monitored species of the area, whereas the 2017 inventory counts red deer as a target species too.
