Bayat Plateau (Yayla)
Bayat Plateau is a high mountain plateau located within the boundaries of the Bayat district in the northwest of Çorum. Situated roughly 14 kilometers from Çerkeş Village, which belongs to the district, the plateau lies about 1,800 meters above sea level. This elevation gives the plateau a cool and humid mountain climate; during the summer months it offers noticeably cooler weather than the surrounding plains and settlements.
Natural Environment and Vegetation
The plateau is surrounded by forests of Scots pine, black pine, and hornbeam. This forest cover both creates the plateau’s visual richness and provides shaded areas, making the region suitable for rest and camping during the summer season. The coexistence of needle-leaved pine species with broad-leaved hornbeam is a typical example of the mixed forest structure characteristic of the transition zone between the Central Black Sea region and Central Anatolia.
The plateau has slightly rugged terrain and abundant water sources. This water supply both supports the vitality of the vegetation and serves as a basic natural resource for those who visit the plateau. Its rugged but not very steep topography makes the plateau well suited to long walks and nature excursions.
Visiting and Activities
Bayat Plateau stands out primarily as a camping area. Its forest-ringed flatlands and the presence of water sources provide suitable conditions for tent camping and day-trip nature activities. The plateau is also one of the preferred areas for hiking (trekking) and hunting activities. Its peaceful nature and its location away from the noise of the city offer an inviting setting for those who wish to rest and spend time immersed in nature.
With these features, Bayat Plateau ranks among Çorum’s natural areas with potential for highland tourism. For more information about the district’s historical and geographical context, see the article History of Bayat.
