Taş Mağaza (Stone Store)
Taş Mağaza (“Stone Store”) is a commercial building dating to the late Ottoman period, located on Hürriyet Sokak in the Çepni neighbourhood of central Çorum. Standing on the same street as Veli Paşa Han, it is one of the surviving examples of Çorum’s traditional commercial fabric in the city center.
Architecture
The building has a rectangular plan consisting of a basement, a first floor and a mezzanine level, with round-arched windows. The lower part of the first floor and the mezzanine is built of yellow cut stone, while the upper part is of brick. The building has a hedgehog-tooth eave (kirpi saçak), a gabled roof, and Ottoman-style roof tiles.
Location
The Çepni neighbourhood is where Çorum’s historic bazaar and caravanserai fabric is concentrated. Taş Mağaza stands close to Veli Paşa Han within this fabric, on the same historic axis as the city center’s traditional shopping and bazaar district.
