Mecitözü Government House and Clock Tower
Mecitözü’s historic Government House (Hükümet Konağı), which still serves today as the district governorate building, and the clock tower standing right beside it, are among the most visible symbols of the district center’s late Ottoman period. Because the sources differ significantly on the exact date of construction of the building and the tower, this information is presented here with appropriate caution.
History
According to the record kept by Kültür Envanteri (kulturenvanteri.com), the foundations of today’s Government House were laid in 1865-1866 with the support of Ziya Paşa, then governor of Amasya. The same record, drawing on historian Abdizade Hüseyin Hüsamettin’s work “Amasya Tarihi” (Volume 1, p. 319), states that the building was rebuilt in 1898 by Mecitözü’s district governor, İskilipli İsmail Bey.
Mecitözü District Governorate’s own official history page, however, gives a different date and name: according to this source, district governor İskilipli İsmail Kemal Bey had a new government house and a clock tower built in 1894. Local travel sources, meanwhile, state that the clock tower was built in 1899, again by an “İskilipli Kemal Bey,” but that the tower seen today is not the original structure — that the original tower was demolished and the present one built more recently. This latter claim has not been confirmed by an official source.
The district governor’s full name (İsmail Bey / İsmail Kemal Bey), the year of construction or reconstruction (1894 / 1898 / 1899), and whether the work in question was an original construction or a rebuilding are not fully consistent across the sources; the dates are therefore presented here as differing accounts rather than settled fact.
Today
The building was restored in 2012 and continues to serve as the Mecitözü District Governorate’s service building. The clock tower, standing right beside the Government House, likewise continues to serve as the visual symbol of the district’s administrative center. Despite the differing dates given in the sources, they agree that both the building and the tower belong to the administrative center that took shape in Mecitözü sometime between the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century, following the district’s elevation to kaza (district) status.
